Ukraine has a rich tapestry of cultural traditions celebrating the Christmas holiday. From art that traces its roots back to before Christianity’s introduction to Ukraine, to uniquely Ukrainian dishes that play a vital part in family and community celebrations: here are some interesting Ukrainian Christmas traditions and what they mean!

The Christmas Spider
Despite the exact origins of the Christmas Spider not being clear, it is one of the most widely practiced Ukrainian Christmas traditions today. According to legend, the story of the first Christmas Spider goes something like this:
A widow and her young children had a pinecone fall onto the dirt floor of their home and over the course of the year, a tree miraculously grew. While the children dreamed of decorating the tree and celebrating Christmas with their mother, the widow knew that they were too poor to afford decorations and that her children would be let down. However, as the family slept, a spider spun its web across the branches of the tree. On Christmas morning, as the first rays of sunlight came through the windows of the house, the spider’s webs transformed into gold and silver. This meant that not only did the children and widow get their wish of a beautiful Christmas tree, but they were also elevated out of poverty and lived a happy life afterwards.
Today, human-crafted spider webs are a uniquely Ukrainian version of something that many people are familiar with – tinsel! While hanging shiny tinsel in Christmas trees has become a part of many people’s holiday celebrations, the celebration of the legend of the Christmas Spider remains proudly Ukrainian.
The Christmas Star
The legend of the North Star guiding the three wise men to Christ in the manger is an indelible part of the story of the Nativity. The Ukrainian people have a way of celebrating this star that is uniquely theirs. In Ukraine, it is common to see eight-pointed Christmas stars not just on top of trees, but on colorfully decorated poles at the heads of groups of carolers, going throughout their communities to spread cheer to their neighbors. Unlike other countries where stars are made from metal or glass, Christmas stars in Ukraine are often colorful works of art with elaborate decorations.

Unique Ukrainian Christmas Foods
As part of the celebrations on Christmas Day, there is a twelve course feast of unique Ukrainian dishes, each with a distinct symbolic importance to the holiday.
While the exact order of service varies by region and personal preference, the first dish and most important is Kutia, a wheat porridge, traditionally seasoned with poppy seeds, nuts, dried fruits and honey. According to Ukrainian folklore, this meal is associated with a bountiful harvest in the year to come and symbolizes the unity of mankind with God and the departed.
Holubtsi cabbage rolls stuffed with mushrooms and rice also make a key part of Ukrainian Christmas feasts. According to tradition, they symbolize the Dove of Peace – their name in Ukrainian means “little doves.”
